COVID-19 Resources For Your Foster Home

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected every aspect of society in myriad ways, and foster homes are no exception.

Our Therapeutic Foster Care team hasn’t stopped working during this pandemic. It’s available as much as ever through Telehealth appointments and website resources.

In the meantime, our team wants to share plenty of other resources you can utilize in your foster home to get through the pandemic.

Government resources

  • What You Should Know About COVID-19 to Protect Yourself and Others. This Centers for Disease Control graphic explains the basics on the virus, how it spreads and how to help prevent spreading. The CDC also lists guidelines on how to care for someone at home who has COVID-19.
  • The Indiana State Department of Health shares its suggestions for preventing infection for close contacts.
  • BeWell Indiana, a division of the Indiana Division of Mental Health and Addiction (DMHA), has a comprehensive site. It offers a call center for assistance, a resource guide and links to assistance for Hoosiers.
  • The Indiana Department of Child Services lists specific guidelines for your foster home. It covers everything from doctor appointments to foster parent trainings.
  • The Administration for Children and Families (ACF)’s Stafford Act explains the guidelines for foster home licensing, which have changed during the national emergency.
  • The Indiana Association of Resources and Child Advocacy lists several links for COVID-19 preparedness for the child welfare community.

Address Stress at the Holidays

Enjoy the season at your own pace.

The holiday season often brings us reasons for joy, cause for celebration, and opportunities to build and forge connections. But they can also present us with mile-long to-do lists, high expectations, and stress. With holidays right around the corner, consider this advice to address stress during the busy winter season.

Sarah Miller, PMHNP-BC

Sarah Miller works with the addictions team, general psychiatry for adolescents and adults, and the competency restoration team. She is board-certified as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Her specialties are working in addictions and with people who experience serious mental illness.

Miller graduated from Indiana University with a psychology degree and went back to school for nursing. She received her nursing degree from Indiana Wesleyan University and worked in a nursing home and also spent time working in a group home with adolescents. She received her master’s degree from Vanderbilt University.

She enjoys hanging out with her family and her two dogs, and going to sporting events.

Joanna Chambers, MD

Dr. Joanna Chambers is a psychiatrist who began seeing Adult & Child Health patients in November 2021. She graduated from Medical College of Georgia with her Doctorate of Medicine in 1996 and completed her residency in psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine. In addition to bringing a wealth of experience, she currently serves as an associate professor at Indiana University School of Medicine where she teaches Clinical Psychiatry. She is certified in Addiction Medicine and has a special interest in treating pregnant and postpartum women. She is President of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry Organization as well as a sitting member of many medical association boards. Recently, she has won the Residents’ Award for Teaching Excellence in 2020 from Indiana University and has received “Best Doctors Award” in 2010, 2011, and 2014. Dr. Chambers is incredibly active in the medical, academic, and research realms of medicine. She is currently accepting new patients on Wednesdays.
