4 Ways to Prepare Your Resume for the New Year

Do your New Year’s resolutions include making a career change? Follow these tips to be sure your resume is career ready. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date Did you get a new phone number or move? Do you have a new email address you’re currently using? If so, does your resume reflect the change? Not being able to get a hold of a good candidate because the contact information listed on the resume is incorrect is one of the top frustrations of recruiters. Don’t let outdated information cost you that new career! Check formatting and grammar Make sure your resume is free of errors. Small typos might not seem like that big of a deal, but hiring managers can see them as red flags. This small mistake might give the impression that you don’t pay attention to details or that you might make mistakes while on the job. Small errors while performing job duties can cost companies money. In a manager’s sea of resumes, the ones with errors usually wind up in the “no” pile. Clearly state completed degrees and other training Did you finish a degree or other training course but your resume still says “expected…”? If you finished any trainings or programs that will enhance your employability skills, highlight it. Don’t leave an employer guessing if you finished. It’s not necessary to put a graduation date, but be sure to make it clear that you finished by using words like “completed” or “obtained”. Make sure your objectives are in line with the position This is where a little research can go a long way. If the position you are applying to is a second shift job doing working in the community and you list on your resume that you are seeking an office position with regular morning hours, your resume might not wind up on the top of a hiring manager’s list of applicants to call. Be sure to research positions and make sure they are in line with your career objectives.
